Dr Powell brings over 15 years of academic research and life science technology commercialization experience to Bloodstone Ventures.
Dr. Powell received a BSc Hons (1st Class) and Ph.D. from the Department of Biochemistry, University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand, where he also trained in Microbiology. Dr Powell did his Post-Doctoral training in Immunology, Virology, Cell Biology and Vaccinology at Georgetown University, the University of Maryland, Baltimore and the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute. During his Post-Doctoral time at UMB and UMBI Dr Powell was a co-inventor on several issued and licensed patents.
Upon completion of his Post-Docs, he accepted an Assistant Professorship at the Institute of Human Virology, UMBI, directed by Professor Robert Gallo MD, where he performed independent basic research as well as directed the Immunology, Virology and Protein Biochemistry contract services laboratories. During this period he pursued an MBA at the University of Maryland College Park’s Robert H Smith School of Business.
He subsequently used his program management, business management, and accounting training to help produce business and financing plans for a successful life sciences university spinout company. He also oversaw Institute wide IP identification and protection for the IHV and served on UMBI’s technology Patent Review Board as IHV’s faculty representative.
In 2006 he moved full-time to UMBI’s Office of Technology Development where he was responsible for the technology transfer and intellectual property functions. In this role he identified technology with commercial potential, coordinated its legal protection, identified licensing opportunities and negotiated sponsored research, option, and license agreements.
